Fin & Feather
Fin and Feather Pet Shop was started in 1968 by Pat and John Smith. We bred show parakeets in our home and would sell some of the birds to the local pet shops. On December 5, 1968 we walked into a pet shop called Noah's Ark, located where Empire Wok is in this shopping plaza. The owner said he didn't want to buy any birds because he was thinking of selling the business, and we walked out that night with the key. Fin & Feather was born.
The first few years were difficult, but because of dedication to our customer service and hard work in the business, we opened a second store in Westerly, R.I. in 1970, which we sold three years later to an employee. In 1973 we opened a second store across the parking lot which specialized in puppies, kittens, and grooming. In 1980 we moved to our present location and combined both shops into a 3,000 square foot complete pet shop. In 1992 we expanded into a 6,100 square foot store and we expanded again in 2002 to 11,000 square feet, making us the largest full-line pet shop in Connecticut.
Before we entered the pet business, John worked as a Machinist and Pat as a registered nurse. Because we both like animals, we decided to buy the pet store. We've never been sorry. It's a great business. We've had 5 children who grew up in the store and have worked on and off in the store throughout the years. We have had many wonderful employees who frequently come back to say hello. We recognize that we are in the pet business, but we often say we are as much in the people business. We want the business to grow and we can only do that with dedicated employees and loyal customers. We will do everything we possibly can in the years to come to make Fin & Feather an enjoyable place to work and shop.
